under a barren sun,
cold classrooms that you
get to after a long hard run.
Then there is climbing upon
costly carpeted stairs before lunch.
After that, one more long-haired teacher.
After that, I go home.

Tuvshin (aka Tony) was a student of mine from Mongolia. (Yes, I was teaching Engrish) This poem was written as a sample to show him and his Chinese classmate Peng Ju (aka Michael) that poetry need not climb ridiculous heights in subject matter or use of language.
